Shop and Serve (May 2nd)

posted Apr 22, 2015, 3:50 AM by Unknown user   [ updated May 3, 2015, 3:05 PM ]

Come join us as we "Shop and Serve" for those in need at Lazarus' Boutique located at Grand Avenue Temple.

Serve as a "personal shopper" for the homeless sojourners.  The Boutique provides clothing as well as personal hygiene items to those in need. Being a "personal shopper" ensures each individual gets what he/she needs with the correct sized clothing and necessary toiletries. The sojourner is given a sense of dignity by having your undivided attention for a few moments.

Seven to ten adult volunteers are needed.  Upper age high school students may take part provided they are with a larger group.

When & Where:  Saturday, May 2nd, 2015.  Meet at MUMC's Fellowship Hall at 9:30am to carpool to Grand Avenue Temple, 205 E. 9th St., KCMO.  We will return to MUMC by 2pm.

Registration & Cost:  Please sign up at the Connection Point at MUMC or contact Janet Williams at janet.williams@getGod.info for more information.  Or call the church office at (913) 441-1435. This is a free ministry requiring only your time and involvement.

Vision Screening for Children (Apr 16)

posted Apr 8, 2015, 11:18 AM by Unknown user   [ updated Apr 18, 2015, 6:30 PM ]

In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions at their International Convention and urged them to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness."  Since then, Lions have become renowned worldwide for their efforts to improve sight, prevent blindness and other visual impairment, and improve eye health and eye care for millions of people around the world.

Members of our local Lenexa Lions Club, Margaret and Wes Moore, have made it possible for children to have their eyes tested for free, right here at MUMC!

When:  April 16th, 11am to 6pm

Where:  Room 200 (former "Castle Room"), MUMC's main building, 23860 W. 75th St., Shawnee, KS 66227

Cost & Registration:  Free!  Just show up!  (Parental consent is required.) Contact the church office at (913) 441-1435 for more information.

Bring a Sack, Fill a Sack & Fold a Sack Sunday (Apr. 12th)

posted Apr 1, 2015, 9:34 AM by Unknown user   [ updated Apr 13, 2015, 7:33 PM ]

Are you looking for a simple way to serve?  A project that is family-friendly? A project where you can actually sit down on the job doing it? Then get ready for "Sack Sunday!"

Bring a sack lunch (drinks and dessert will be furnished.) After eating, we will start by folding 20,000 bags for the Harvester's "Stamp Out Hunger" campaign. Granted, 20,000 is a lot of bags, but it is only a small portion of the 1/2 million bags needed for the campaign. Folded bags are distributed to our mail carriers who place them in mailboxes throughout the Kansas City and Topeka area. The bags will then be picked up by the Mail Carriers on May 9th with hopes that the bags are filled with non-perishable items or that recipients have placed a check to Harvester in the envelope included in the folded bags.

In addition to folding, please bring non-glass, non-perishable food items to Fellowship Hall on April 12th. There will be a special time during the service for everyone to place their donated food items at the altar.

One folded sack at a time can make a difference in our community. It's in the bag!

When: Following Sunday's service, April 12, 2015 (11:45am)

Where:  MUMC's Fellowship Hall

Cost/Registration:  No cost other than food items donated and no registration is needed.  JUST SHOW UP!

A huge thank you to those of you who have already pitched in (or signed up to do so) and cleaned every-other week in preparation for Sunday services.

When:  Saturday, March 21st, starting at 9 AM and going until we are finished.

Where:  The sanctuary and surrounding area and fellowship hall.

Registration:  There are sign-up sheets located at The Connection Point, or fill-in the form under "Serve" above to let us know you will help at a different time. If you have any questions, contact Sandra Evans or Candace Shockey (sanctuary) or Patti Plummer (chapel).  Or call the church office: (913) 441-1435.
